Domain Registration FAQs

How do I register a domain name?
The process is easy and instant! Simply go to OCS Domains to register your domain. If you are a school, government organization, or company that wishes to pay with a check or purchase order, please contact us before your purchase and we’ll prepare an estimate for your accounting team.
How do I transfer my domain name to OCS?
Simply visit our domain transfer page to get started. Before you transfer, you’ll want to make sure that your domain is not locked at the previous registrar and that you have at least 7 days before the domain expires.

If your domain expires in less than 7 days with the old registrar, a transfer may still be possible, but in this situation we recommend renewing with your old registrar and waiting 60 days (required by ICANN) to begin the transfer to us.
How do I renew my domain?
You’ll receive a notice at least 30 days out advising you to renew your domain. Payment instructions are provided in the email. If you need help logging into your account or renewing the domain, please contact us and we’ll be glad to help.

It is important not to let your domain lapse. If it does, your domain may be suspended. After a grace period, your domain name will enter a status called redemption. In this phase, only you can renew it, but a redemption fee of at least $80 (depends on domain extension) may be charged. OCS has no control over this additional fee for late renewals, so we urge you to renew your domain name before expiration.
Can my domain name be set to automatically renew?
Yes. During checkout you’ll have this option, or you can request this at any time by contacting us.
Can I add private registration to my domain?
Yes. For a small fee, you can add this option during checkout, or you can request this at any time by contacting us.
Do I have to transfer or register my domain with OCS to host it?
No, you may register your domain anywhere and host it with us. We do think you will like our low domain registration prices, however, so we encourage you to check them out first before buying.

Compliance and Security

How are your IT operations secured?
We take security very seriously at OCS. The safety and integrity of our client's data and operations are our topmost priority. To that end, our IT operations are quite secure. Here are a few of the measures we take to this end:

  • We utilize Google Workspace and ProtonMail for our It operations. Our Google Workspace configuration is highly secure with all best-practice security measures activated. We use ProtonMail for individual consultant email which not only encrypts all data but also guarantees the privacy and security of our client's communications.
  • All accounts have 2FA/MFA enabled with secure backups. We have protections in place to help reduce the risk of SIM swapping and other attacks against SMS.
  • All data is encrypted in transit and at rest. When possible, we utilize zero-knowledge encryption and manage our own encryption keys. We prefer vendors who provide as much privacy and security as possible.
  • We use SPF, DKIM, and DMARC records, force TLS, and ensure only up-to-date clients are used for email.
How are your cloud operations secured?
OCS maintains a very small set of cloud-based operations as most of our clients maintain their own cloud-provider accounts that we simply manage. When we do manage cloud vendor accounts, we do so with the same, if not greater, protections we use for our own accounts. These protections are compliant with at least SOC 2-level compliance measures, and we confirm to ISO 27001 to match client needs.

For our own cloud operations, we use Amazon Web Services and Linode. We utilize all SOC 2 required security measures, including use of IAM accounts, auditing those accounts at least monthly, enabling of monitoring on key resources, including CPU and IO utilization. We force encryption at rest and in transit, securely back up our data with encryption and redundancy, and routinely audit firewall settings.
How secure are your payment systems?
We use FreshBooks for our accounting, and payments are handled through Stripe. FreshBooks is PCI compliant, uses Google Cloud Platform for hosting, and has a bug bounty program. You can read about FreshBook's security policies and Stripe's security program.
